In October 2009, Visitation Rites kicked off a virtual music video residency with Los Angeles video artist Samantha Cornwell. Our concept: Samantha pours through dozens of MP3 submissions from bands all over this wide, wide land, selects a few that tickle her imagination, and responds with a video representing her subjective experience of the sound. This video for Brooklyn’s Love Like Deloreans, a Kosmiche-inspired synthesizer trio who I swear lifted Union Pool half an inch off the ground last time I saw them play live, is the second installment of the project, which debuted with this video for “Demonzblood” by The Lame Drivers.
In the words of the video artist herself:
“Like any (semi-) collaborative effort, the video that you see here went through a few drafts. The song “Ollie Mess” initially evoked a vision of Retro-Futurism, and a world where technology was an extension of ourselves. My original video was a fusion of Retro- Futurism (mostly of the 1980s variety) and the Youtube “video diaries” that are such a huge part of the Web 2.0 landscape, and that have been so often reflected in contemporary video installation art. Fusing these aesthetics produced something both humorous and celebratory.
When I showed the initial version to the band Love Like Deloreans, they were pleased, but said that they responded better to the more abstract sequences in the video, and would prefer me to ratchet those up. This presented me with the challenge of taking their suggestions (and including imagery that they felt fit more with their band aesthetic) without compromising my own vision for this particular project. I tackled this by putting more ideas in the mix. As a result, the video that you see today is a visually dense, rambling piece which observes the role that technology has played in our lives over the course of the last century. Rather than drawing any conclusions, it celebrates a general spirit of innovation through rhythm and color.”
