“Hail Fire” – La Otracina from Samantha Cornwell on Vimeo.
Cornwell on Cornwell (on La Otracina):
“When I was approached by La Otracina’s Adam Kriney about making a video, he very generously told me to pick any song I’d like to work with. Naturally, this made me feel like a kid in a candy store. I was attracted to the track “Hail Fire” because it had this really engrossing atmospheric quality that stood out to me. I also found that the song structure was kind of unusual, which I felt would present an interesting challenge in terms of editing.
While building this video, my focus was more on atmosphere than story. There is a loose narrative of sorts. The video is from the point of view of a lonely wanderer who goes to a natural environment hoping to find some form of enlightenment or solace. What our hero finds instead is a relationship to nature that is both beautiful and sinister. The “dark side” of Psychedelia, if you will. To create this vibe, I put a lot of energy into the color and texture of the images on screen. There is one image that really captures the spirit of the video as a whole. It is the image of a Venus Fly Trap, swallowing a cricket.”
