“Black Wizard” is six-and-a-half minutes of ramshackle freak rock from Brooklyn’s Flower Orgy, who have the particularity of consisting of three females and one male, and of residing in Brooklyn’s peninsular Red Hook neighborhood, which is actually shaped like a hook. Full of gristled licks, co-ed vocal harmonies, and surprise chord changes, this Alex Bleeker-recorded guitar stomper could easily be a lost New England fire pit jam between the defunct Vermont psych-folk collective Feathers and the Magik Markers at their most unhinged. Especially like the half-screamed, half-sung “I don’t know what you’re doing to me” refrain– presumably addressed to the black wizard himself– and the guitar free-for-all near the end, which is one beautiful mess if I’ve ever seen one.

With temperatures rising and the sun shining on a semi-regular basis, it definitely appears to be time to pack away winter-y synths and bust out the loud guitar jams again. Enter Brooklyn’s Flower Orgy, who sent us a few demos from their upcoming, Alex Bleeker-produced EP. Unlike the folkier sounds of the band’s recent Curatorial Club release, here Flower Orgy guide listeners on a garage rock journey chock full of everything that will always be pure and good about this kind of music. On “Mama Earth” the band bring the noise with a flurry of crunchy chug-chugga guitar chords and a come-hither riff, compelling imaginary basement audiences to nod in rhythm and sing-along, “We don’t know anything at all!” Despite this lyrical display of humility, this demo proves Flower Orgy clearly know what they’re doing. Their finished EP will no doubt make for regular summer listening.

When I stumbled upon Maids at a one-off Upstairs CD-R show at Coco66 this Spring, I remember stopping dead in my tracks, covering my ears in pain, and being unable to stop mouthing the words, “Abandon All Hope All Ye Who Enter.” Behind a suffocating wall of smoke, the 2-man rhythm section of New Jersey’s Big Troubles could be seen down on the ground in matching child’s poses, bowing in deference before a projection of a giant floating head — not unlike the Wizard himself, pictured above. I could barely make out what type of gear they were using, but the squall they produced was so debilitatingly loud that I couldn’t help remembering the one time I saw Whitehouse play and actually experienced the sensation of my ear drums being stretched to the ripping point. Funny thing, is Maids sound like nothing like Whitehouse. As I learned when Sam Franklin (also of No Demons here) rolled up to Newtown radio last Sunday, they simply layer purring drones and lackadaisical pentatonic keyboard scales until the room gets so saturated with sound that you actually end up getting a little scared. Probably all the more so because they are clean-cut surburban dudes who play in indie rock bands and show up on stage with their shirts tucked in.
