Sightings: Future Shuttle, “Fog Spelunk” Video

Wednesday, September 7th, 2011

There is a strange, spheroidal form on the cover of Future Shuttle’s recently Zoned In Water’s Edge EP; it’s sitting in the middle of a field, and it could be anything from a monolithic mushroom to an unusually pillowy UFO. It’s probably the perfect metaphor for the six, softly structured dream environments that lie in wait inside, for they have the particularly of sounding like they are simultaneously issuing from the Earth and floating off into a great wide unknown. Haunted Internet’s video from “Fog Spelunk” brings us out to the woods in Sullivan County, New York, sets loose some colored smoke, and captures this metaphysical limbo state in high resolution.

Sightings: Future Shuttle, “Fog Spelunk”

Tuesday, January 11th, 2011

Last time I saw Brooklyn electronic duo Future Shuttle perform live — at Piano’s on the Lower East Side, accompanied by flute player Lizzie Harper, who now joins them for most of their performances — I remember feeling the same way I once felt when I was lucky enough to receive a foot massage from a friend: shocked by a sudden apprehension of my inner exhaustion, then shocked by all the emotions that start to well up when you let your guard down without knowing it. With their new Water’s Edge EP, out this year on Kip Uhlhorn’s new Intercoastal Artists imprint and produced by Sam Haar of Blondes, we discover their mile-long pillow-scapes in higher resolution, revealing an attention to texture and dynamic variation that can only come from losing track of time inside the studio, trapped inside your own spell.

Sightings: Future Shuttle and Blondes Jam from Matchless to the Moon

Monday, January 25th, 2010

Future Shuttle / Blondes Jam @ Matchless, Part 2 from Camilla Padgitt-Coles on Vimeo.

This one creeps up on you. I have yet to catch a live voyage by the two Brooklyn space cadettes who record under the name Future Shuttle, but there sure is some lovely gravitational tug-and-pull going on in this collaboration with Blondes, whose beats always drive hard towards center of the earth. And I wouldn’t ordinarily expect the whoooop of this loop to provide enough knob fodder for an entire song, but these four former Oberlin chums somehow manage to extract mile upon three-dimensional mile out if it. Are we really hearing just the same thing repeated over and over again? Each time they edge in with new frequencies, I have to do a double-take.
