Los Angeles synth-meister M. Geddes Gengras is at it again, with some dense, graveyard shift sounds. Just a few days ago, Geddes posted a collection of 5 recent tracks on his soundcloud, that are apparently attached to an unnamed, upcoming tape release. If you’re familiar at all with his work, it is no surprise that each of these tracks humbly pulls the listener into its own dense, sonic world. That world could be described as an undulating circle of glitches and bleeps. The power of this music is subtle, but undeniable.

Sightings: The Deeep, “Dream” Dj MGG Sunrise Cassette Mix

The Deeep’s Life Light cassette has been one of my favorite acquisitions on spools from the past year. The rich low tempos, and the enchanting female vocals create a seductive “post trip-hop” sound. Los Angeles analog synth master DJ MGG (M. Geddes Gengras of Personable, Robedoor, Warm Climate, WHERES YR CHILD, Duppy Gun Productions) just made this mix of their track “Dream”. Its glitchy bleeps, and moments of slightly off rhythm, paired with The Deeep’s echoey ambiance make this the perfect track for a post-club Ibizan morning when you are trying to mellow out and stop grinding your damn teeth. The thirteen minute tracks takes you through moments of up tempo revelry, but lands back on the dark, persistent rhythm that started things off. The ghost certainly has a place in this machine, although she might be wearing parachute pants.

Sightings: Personable, “Jµ∫† çøø¬”

M. Geddes Gengras seems to make music for maximum body/mind harmony. He has sent many Los Angeles house shows and DIY spaces into the stratosphere with his expansive, slow brewing analog synth compositions. This track, which he created under the alias Personable, takes his sound into a more rythmic, acid house direction. This should come as no surprise to those who have been listening to Ged’s DJ mixes for Where’s YR Child, the DJ night that he does along with Cameron Stallones of Sun Araw. This 13 minute space age club thumper, with its glorious bleeps and unstoppable pulse, should send any receptive body into ecstatic motion. If the future is a paradise of all night dance parties, perhaps Personable is preparing us all for those times.

M. Geddes Gengras and the Architecture of Mood

At the end of a high energy night at Sync Space, this set by M. Geddes Gengras (also of Pocahaunted, Robedoor, and Talisman fame) was just what the doctor ordered. I have streamed his music on many occasions from the comfort of my home computer, and have always found it to be really beautiful. But when you are listening to this music with three Gchat windows open and an episode of True Blood loading in another tab, a certain amount of the magic is lost. You see, although Ged Gengras seems like a pretty unassuming guy, he is an architect of mood at heart, armed with a moog synth and a fierce sense of composition. The crowd of kids who had hung around after shaking their collective behinds to Warm Climate, Soft Healer, and Sun Araw, now sat on the ground in various stages of blissful calm. It was like we’d all gone back to the kindergarten nap times of our youth. However, this music is not for passive listening; the tones oscillate between effervescent and piercing in a way that requires full-body focus. Plug in your headphones when watching the video above, and let yourself fall into a trance.
