Psychic Handbook- “Puppy March” from Samantha Cornwell on Vimeo.

I first became aware of Oakland’s Psychic Handbook (Alejandro Archuleta) back in early February. It was at a show at Synchronicity Space in Los Angeles, where I had ventured with the intention of shooting live videos of Moon Duo and Pocahaunted (which, at that time, featured Cameron Stallones of Sun Araw). This was only my second live video venture, so I was quite apprehensive and insisted on getting there very early. Naturally, none of the bands were even close to playing, and the only people around were myself, my boyfriend Matt, and the lovely people who run Synchronicity space. I set up my tripod in an empty corner near the stage, and waited for the music to commence.

“Lupton Pittman” – Magic Treason from Samantha Cornwell on Vimeo.

Cornwell on Cornwell (On Magic Treason):

“Elliot Sharp is a music writer. He is the founder of the blog Biomusicosophy, and has been a reader and supporter of Visitation Rites for some time. After we announced the music video project, he submitted the song “Lupton Pittman” from his solo project, Magic Treason. I must confess that I was a little nervous at first, considering how much support he has shown Visitation Rites, and how awful I would feel if I didn’t respond well to the music. As soon as I gave the song a play, however, I knew this wouldn’t be an issue at all.

“Hail Fire” – La Otracina from Samantha Cornwell on Vimeo.

Cornwell on Cornwell (on La Otracina):

“When I was approached by La Otracina’s Adam Kriney about making a video, he very generously told me to pick any song I’d like to work with. Naturally, this made me feel like a kid in a candy store. I was attracted to the track “Hail Fire” because it had this really engrossing atmospheric quality that stood out to me. I also found that the song structure was kind of unusual, which I felt would present an interesting challenge in terms of editing.

Ollie Mess— Love Like Deloreans from Samantha Cornwell on Vimeo.

In October 2009, Visitation Rites kicked off a virtual music video residency with Los Angeles video artist Samantha Cornwell. Our concept: Samantha pours through dozens of MP3 submissions from bands all over this wide, wide land, selects a few that tickle her imagination, and responds with a video representing her subjective experience of the sound. This video for Brooklyn’s Love Like Deloreans, a Kosmiche-inspired synthesizer trio who I swear lifted Union Pool half an inch off the ground last time I saw them play live, is the second installment of the project, which debuted with this video for “Demonzblood” by The Lame Drivers.

In the words of the video artist herself:

Visitation Rites, in partnership with resident video artist Samantha Cornwell, is proud to announce an ongoing series of original music videos that will make their debut on this site. The project kicked off earlier this week with a video Cornwell directed for the Lame Drivers’ song “Demonzblood.” We are hoping to make this project a regular part of the site, and are looking for bands and musicians to participate.

Introducing “Demonzblood” (The Lame Drivers), by Video-Artist-in-Residence Samantha Cornwell

An Introduction by the Artist:

“The song “Demondzblood” falls in line with a long history of infectuous guitar-based music by Brooklyn-based three-piece, The Lame Drivers. To give you the full disclosure, I have had the pleasure of knowing these guys for 5+ years, since their original incarnation in Providence, RI. They have always had an ability to evoke their influences, while maintaining an organic energy in their songs that makes them a pleasure to listen to.
