Woodsman- Live at the Bacchus- Los Angeles, CA 11/13/2010 from Samantha Cornwell on Vimeo.

Last month Denver Colorado’s Woodsman treated the people of Los Angeles to an epic set of guitar-heavy, druggy jams. They played at The Bacchus, a former brothel toward the Southwest corner of the city. It was my first visit to the venue, and I have to say that the decor made no secret of its former identity. Towards the end of the night, we all crammed into the tiny back room to hear Woodsman unleash their fury. It was the kind of music that reaches right for my heart. Although we were in an LA whorehouse, I found myself transported to a Bazaar in Istanbul. Belly dancers were all that was missing…

Sightings: GEM TRAILS, “Old Kid”

Tuesday, August 17th, 2010

This one commands the breathless awe of a five-year-old child peering inside her mother’s jewelry box– the fear that her breath will somehow shatter its contents, the anxiety that her eyes will somehow make it disappear. It’s easy to riff on “GEM TRAILS,” the title of the new solo project by Woodsman’s Trevor P., but “Old Kid” tinkles and twinkles like a giant pile of rockcandy resurfacing in the dreams of adulthood, as inexpicable as it is poignant. The beauty we encounter here is of the most fragile variety; the sparkling aural glitter says “yes” to the universe, and the voice simply strains to say “yes.”

Underwater Visitations Sunday Brunch Takeover #2/Episode 10: The Woodsman Episode

Thursday, June 24th, 2010

Heat can be pretty psychoactive. I have suffered through enough late summer DIY shows in this city to know that it can make you feel drunk when you are dry, induce dizziness, lightheadedness, blurred vision, tunnel vision — and, on rare occasions, even predator vision. It can dull your experience of the most bad-ass jam you’ve heard all year while heightening its impression in memory. I am actually pretty glad that I missed Woodsman’s set at Monster Island Basement in Brooklyn last Friday because it don’t think I would have survived to tell the story. When they swung by Newtown Radio last Sunday, the station was probably just as cramped, but the free-standing air-conditioner wheezing dutifully in the corner lowered the temperature to a level that was pleasantly hallucinogenic. Each color and each sound was more saturated than usual, each beat went straight to the temple. Maybe it’s just that Woodsman is so percussion-heavy, but I couldn’t help feeling like was trapped inside my favorite Can video — minus the long and stringy hair.
